Proposed Class Action Settlement

Greetings from Dalton Local Schools.

Below is an email from the Ohio Department of Education and a copy of the Notice of Proposed Class Action Lawsuit Settlement from a case (Doe v Ohio Department of Education), which began in 1991. The Ohio Department of Education has asked all school districts in the State to share the Notice. A hard copy of the Notice will be in the Office of each school.

The parties in the Doe v. Ohio Department of Education class action have submitted a proposed settlement to the U.S. District Court for approval. The first step in the approval process of the settlement is to provide notice of the proposed settlement to affected students and their parents. To accomplish this, the Department requests your district take the following steps as soon as possible:

  1. Post a copy of the Notice of Proposed Class Action Settlement on your district’s website;
  2. Post a copy of the Notice of Proposed Class Action Settlement in a central location in each building that is open to the public in your district;
  3. Provide a copy of the Notice of Proposed Class Action Settlement directly to the parents or students through email, any electronic portals (for example, parent or student portals used to distribute grades, assignments or forms) or other means reasonably calculated to reach the parents or students in your district.

If you have any questions about this process, please call the Department’s Office of the Chief Legal Counsel at (614) 752-5807.

Sincerely,

Immy Singh

Chief Legal Counsel
